Today I had no idea where I was going, so I started by driving to Taitung. Along the roads which were quite scenic and comparable to something like the Great Ocean Road, I stopped at a few different places to take photos of the rock formations in the water, the cliffs meeting the Pacific Ocean, and some monkeys at one of the places. I managed to get some quite close-up videos of some monkeys although I was quick to leave after that as I was not sure if they would attack me.

When I arrived at Taitung, I could not really figure out what I should do there, so I decided to continue driving to make it to Kenting. The road to Kenting was a lot of fun to drive on. Parts of it was on bridges that overhung the cliffs that lead down to the ocean, and other parts cut more inland on enormous bridges between the mountains and more tunnels.

When I got to Kenting it was around 6pm so when I got to my BNB that I booked when I arrived there was no one at the reception. And the contact details they left I could not use as it was Chinese, so I had to call a Chinese speaking friend to help me communicate with them to let them know I have arrived to collect the key.

Kenting Night Market

I then dropped the car off at my accommodation and walked to the night market to enjoy some street food for dinner. The walk took around 30 minutes and there was no taxi as far as I could see so at this point I was unsure how I would get back to my accommodation later on. When I arrived at the night market, I located a Chinese barbeque stand and ordered myself various kinds of barbeque skewers with everything from intestine to tofu to normal beef cubes. It took quite a while for the vender to cook them but when they were ready, they were so delicious.

After enjoying my skewers and some milk tea I meandered around the market for around 30 minutes taking in the sights and looking at the different stalls at the market. There were a few stalls set up as market ‘bar’s’ that were serving cocktails and other alcoholic beverages on the street. I decided to sit down at one for a while to enjoy some drinks to end off what had been a very long day of driving.

While I was the market bar, I was able to order drinks and ask which cocktails were good in broken Chinese. This led to some interesting conversations with some of the locals who wanted to ask me about how I was learning Chinese as well as help me to practise some of the Chinese phrases I knew at the time.

After chatting for a while, I decided to head back home… now was time to figure out how I could bypass the 30-minute walk home. I had already noted that the area seemed quite safe and everyone seemed fairly friendly so since there were no taxi’s in sight I decided to try hitch hike back to my accommodation. After trying for just a few minutes I was able to flag down a motorbike rider who was heading in the same direction and let me ride on the back of their bike back to my accommodation.
