Today we were planning to go to Jungfraujoch. This was one of the activities that we were most excited about. It would involve a 3-part train journey starting in Interlaken going to Grindelwald and then a two-part train journey to the top of Europe. Before the journey began, I purchased some Switzerland flag gloves and a beanie from a nearby supermarket as I was anticipating that up the top of the mountain, it would be freezing.

On the first part of the journey as we travelled to Grindelwald, the scenery already looked amazing. We travelled across the mountainside seeing many different colored trees, and snow-covered mountains. Once we arrived in Grindelwald, we opted to wait for the following train so we would have time to take some pictures of the surrounding scenery. The area looked amazing and would only get better the closer we got to Jungfraujoch.

Once we got on the next train, we started to ascend, allowing us to take in further views of the snow-painted landscapes, and steep, rocky, mountains. At each point we were able to get off the train, take some photos, and then get back onto the train to continue the trek upwards. The higher we got, the colder but prettier it became.

Arriving at Jungfraujoch

Once we got to the top, we were not disappointed by the views at all. The scenery was truly amazing – snowy mountain surroundings as far as the eye could see. We also noticed that you could really feel the altitude as it was kind of difficult to breathe at the top.

We were feeling quite hungry, so we decided to get lunch in the restaurant at the top. I opted for some bolognaise on fries which was not something that I had tried before but given that it cost 27 CHF (around $45 AUD) I hoped it would satisfy my hunger, which it did. I enjoyed my meal with a local apple cider which was also quite nice.

There were many things to do at the top including, visiting the Lindt shop where we purchased some chocolates, souvenir shops, and an underground walkway that led to a few more activities. Going through the underground walkway we were able to reach the top of Jungfraujoch to go outside and get some photos outside. It was absolutely freezing and there was a very strong snowy wind, so we did not stay long, but we did get some nice photos.

After visiting the outer section, we followed the underground tunnels to the Ice Palace, which was an underground area constructed out of real ice. We had a lot of fun sliding around on the icy floors but had a lot of close calls almost falling over.

After completing all the activities at the top of Jungfraujoch, we decided to head back down. This time we opted to take the gondola down the mountain. It was suspended quite high so on the way down we had a good opportunity to take in the stunning views of the mountains once more.

By the time we made it back, it was getting late, so to save some more money we decided to cook our own dinner, this time opting for jar sauce butter chicken and rice.
